Essay on Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi’s full name was Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was also known as ‘Baapu’, ‘Father of Nation’, ‘Gandhiji’ or ‘Rastrapita’. Rabindranath Tagore also gave him the name ‘Martyr of the Nation’ since 1948. Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He died on 30th January 1948 in Delhi, India. The reason of the death of Mahatma Gandhi was that he was being assassinated by the Hindu activist, Nathuram Godse. After the assassination, Nathuram Godse was hanged as punishment by the government.

Early Life:

His father’s name was Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and his mother’s name was Putlibai Gandhi. He was married to Kasturba Gandhi in 1902. Mahatma Gandhi was a great freedom fighter and was the leader of Indian Independence Movement and was against Britishers and wanted freedom for Indians. Mahatma Gandhi always followed the path of non-violence. Mahatma Gandhi studied law in England and in 1893 came back to India and started practice his career as a lawyer and also met with little success. In South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi faced many struggles and from there only his social life started and he also came to know that the black men that were Indians are been tortured by white men because he was he many times was tortured and insulted by white men.

Mahatma Gandhi and his work:

A Non-Cooperation movement in 1920 was initiated by Gandhiji at the age of 50. That was the very first time when all the Indians irrespective of their color, caste, religion gathered together and fought with Britishers to free India.

The Civil Disobedience Movement was also started in 1930 to disobey the rules made by the Britishers and the main focus of this movement was to disobey the salt law by doing Salt Satyagraha.

A very important role was been played by Quit India Movement in 1942 in India’s freedom as it was the Indians were not helping the Britishers in World War 2 which Britishers were fighting against Europe as Indians wanted freedom.

Principals of Mahatma Gandhi:

Gandhiji also went jail many times but still, he always taught everyone the path of independence and to follow the path of non-violence and truth. Mahatma Gandhi played the war with no weapons. His only weapons were the sword of non-violence and the shield of truth.

Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite principle was ‘Simplicity’ as he himself lived a very simple life wore simple clothes, eats simple food and also lives in a simple manner and also told others also to follow this principle. To gain the satisfaction of living he believes that one must live a simple life.

Mahatma Gandhi as a Social Reformer:

Mahatma Gandhi not just fought with Britishers for Independent Indian instead he also fought with all the evils prevailing in the society. He worked really hard to remove untouchability from the society and he wanted that all the citizens of India should have equal rights. He also named all the Untouchables as ‘Harijans’ where ‘Hari’ means ‘God’ and ‘Jan’ means ‘People’ indicating “The people of God”. He also in order to bring equality in the nation did all his daily work irrespective of what the type of work is.

He also promoted Indians to use the goods made in our own country and not use the foreign goods as doing this Indian Market will flourish and will make Indians independent so that Indians do not depend upon Britishers for their need. For also promoting this he made his own weaved clothes using a wooden spindle known as “the Charkha” which later on became a major sign of India’s independence.

Conclusion:

Mahatma Gandhi was the man of morals. He always followed the path of truth and non-violence. He played a very important role in India’s freedom. Mahatma Gandhi was cremated at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Mahatma Gandhi lives in the heart of many people. He will be always remembered.
