Introduction: An Essay on Corruption

So, I guess corruption is not a new word to us. Nowadays we are flooded with corruption-related topics in our news. Okay, think about it, you are watering your plants but the pot has a hole below. What to do you think, is that water helpful for your plants. Of course, not at all. This is what happens in today’s world. Our whole system has a hole and despite our knowledge, we are just ignoring it.

Corruption – A Global Issue

Corruption is not a national problem, it is a global problem. Almost, every country faces it due to which it affects the growth and development of the nation in all aspects like social, economic and political. It has made its base in both developing and well-developed countries. Also, in our country, it is available from the historical time of the Mughal and sultanate period. It is proved from the sources that the ancients also worried about different types of corruption as well, like extortion, patronage, and embezzlement.

From sources, it can be said that there were some rules to punish the corrupted judges or high authority at that time if they are found guilty. Sources say that “The arthashastra by Kautilya suggests that agents provocateurs should be employed to test the honesty of the judges at periodic intervals. According to Vishnu Smriti, a judge found guilty of corruption should be banished and forfeit all his property.” The ancient peoples prevent this situation from getting worse, but nowadays modern India fails to root out corruption from public life.

How to Cope Corruption?

Since this position was not treated in its initial stage, it grew to this big size, which today needs an instant cure. It is not that people did not know about the corruption entering the system but, it was ignored and so the result is here for all of us to see. “If it had been stopped in the starting just when it had raised its ugly head, it would not have grown so much.” The position today is that corruption could damage people’s lives as our lifestyle includes corruption like a bungalow, car, servants, clubs, etc.

In India, political corruption is worst. The major cause of concern is that corruption is weakening the political body and damaging the major importance of the law which is governing the society. There were so many scams that people lost trust in the government. Indian coal allocation scam, 2G spectrum scam, Commonwealth games scam, fodder scam, etc are some of the many scams that were done by elected ministers, politicians, bureaucrats and high government officials. India got independence in 1947 and it was slowly becoming strong and developing but in the midway corruption started and stop India to grow with that speed.

TI has published the Corruption Perceptions Index [CPI] since 1996, to rank countries annually by their perceived levels of the issue on the basis of expert assessments and opinion surveys. According to this survey, Somalia is ranked the most corrupt country while Denmark is the least corrupt country in the world. India ranks 79 in CPI.

Conclusion

There are over 20 countries on earth that have 0 tax, yet somehow they still have roads, schools, schools, and hospitals. Most of them better than ours! Shakespeare once said, “The best things corrupted become the worst.” It is not that we cannot stop corruption from now. Yes, it will obviously take time. But slowly and the steady thing will work if we take steps towards it. Timely legal action should be taken against offenders, irrespective of their political influence or money power. An atmosphere has to be created for the intellectuals to come forward and serve the country for the welfare of common people.
